![]() ![]() Bands that are generally well known like Killswitch Engage and Slipknot get substantial airplay on multiple stations, other artists remain on the fringes of both - too light for people who want to hear Cattle Decapitation or Cannibal Corpse but too heavy for those who want to listen to Shinedown and Papa Roach. "Ohms", "Radiant City", "Ceremony", "Genesis", and a decent chunk of their early material are receiving support here. "Ceremony" was last played on May 27, and the only Deftones song in Octane rotation is "Swerve City" off Koi No Yokan. Deftones ranked #91 with 52 plays on Octane, #33 with 194 plays on Turbo, and #14 with 276 plays on Liquid Metal. Unlike Octane, Liquid Metal is still keeping Ohms in rotation. Deftones is a perfect example, and appears in the playlists of Octane, Liquid Metal, and Turbo (a 90s/00s based station), but surprisingly gets the most traction here. I've noticed that many bands I like tend to fit in the "overlap" between Octane and Liquid Metal. Satellite radio airplay can really make a difference for smaller bands. While not in the top 25, another nice selection is "Deceitful Idols" from Anima Tempo, a young progressive death metal band from Mexico. Particularly of note is the adventurous pick of "These Black Claws" by VOLA and Shamen, an track combining prog rock with abstract hip-hop lyricism. There's a reasonable amount of diversity in the most played tracks, including deathcore, traditional thrash, power metal, metalcore, and nu metal. The Devil Wears Prada rounds out the top three with "Nightfall" from their Zombie EP sequel, ZII. "Holy Roller", possibly the heaviest Spiritbox track to date, has continued to stick around in the playlist as well. Spiritbox is doing equally well on Liquid Metal as they are on Octane, with "Circle With Me" at #2. ![]() ![]() The most played track in this timeframe is the decidedly radio-unfriendly "Baba Yaga" by the deathcore band Slaughter to Prevail the title referring to a witch from Russian folklore. A dedicated percentage of metal fans are constantly discovering and enjoying new, obscure artists on platforms like Bandcamp, so there is certainly a market for new metal music. A station more along the lines of Apple Music's curated Optimus Metallum and Breaking Metal playlists would be a good idea. That being said, I'd like to see this station emphasize new music and artists further, as Ozzy's Boneyard already focuses on legacy hard rock and metal artists. Gojira, Machine Head, Fear Factory, Spiritbox and Cannibal Corpse all released music this year, while System of a Down, Hatebreed, and Deftones did so last year. However, besides the long-disbanded Pantera, the remainder of the top artists are all coming off new or fairly recent singles, EPs or albums. Not counting other bands covering their material, Metallica gets 685 plays, averaging 11.4 plays per day. Four of the top eight bands belong to the "big 4" legacy acts of thrash metal, even though it's been a few years since they've released new studio albums. Also, while the station's playlist includes both new and classic bands and artists, there is a clear emphasis on groove/thrash metal. Artists that just released a new single or album, or released it within the last year, tend to find their way to the top. ![]()
